Coconut Palm Sugar: The natural, healthier sweetener

We are living in times when the awareness and consumption of ‘natural’ is surpassing food fads and impromptu indulgences. With increasing work pressure and the stress of managing long ‘things-to-dos’, if there’s an escape and control one can have over something, it is diet. In such a scenario, the best thing one can do is find ways to cut down on ingredients and additives that are considered not-so-healthy. Or at least, find healthier alternatives to them. And Coconut Palm Sugar is definitely one of the healthier options.

Coconut Palm Sugar is a natural sugar produced from the sap of cut flower buds of the coconut palm. The liquid sap is collected in containers and placed under heat, until most of the water has evaporated. Unlike regular sugar, Coconut Palm Sugar comes with some health benefits, as it contains nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron and copper. It also has small amounts of phytonutrients like polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanidins and antioxidants.

One of the most noteworthy benefits of Coconut Palm Sugar is that it has a low Glycemic Index (GI). It contains a fiber called Inulin which may slow glucose absorption. Coconut Palm Sugar is given a GI of 35 which places it in a low range vis-a-vis table sugar that has a GI of around 60. So in that sense it’s considered a better sweetener compared to white or table sugar, especially for those with diabetes.

Now here’s a tastier and a gourmet variant of Coconut Sugar, which is the Sprig Coconut Sugar mingled with a Quartet of Brown Spices. It’s an interesting mélange of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and star anise. It is blessed with a slight hint of caramel, mixed with warm spices and is great for traditional Indian cooking as well as international cuisine. Enjoy this wholesome indulgence in your morning cup of tea, coffee, cereal or fruits.

Usage: Stir 1 teaspoon into coffee or tea or sprinkle some on your cereal/fruits at breakfast. While baking, add only in small amounts (usually 1 – 2 teaspoons per batch of batter, dough etc).

So pep up your kitchen shelf with Sprig Coconut Palm Sugar.
